Lapith (Desert Centaurs)

The typical Lapith is a humanoid with a human like head, torso, arms and hands, and the lower body of an antelope. Lapiths are wiry and nimble, built for speed over desert terrain. Most reach only 6’ in height and weigh around 400 pounds.
Lapiths live in small, polyamorous family bands in the wild deserts and windy grasslands of Athas. These bands most often engage in raiding, surviving by stealing livestock from nearby villages and city outskirts at night, then fleeing with their superior speed. They have surprising stealth and good night vision, which help in their nomadic raiding lifestyle.
Because of the size of their antelope body, desert centaurs require half as much food and water as a typical medium-sized humanoid. Similarly, a Lapith usually doesn’t have the upper-body strength to perform free climbing or rope climbing, and would need to be hauled up or down by rope to traverse a vertical surface. Their antelope-like hooves do give them good purchase on cliffsides with any amount of rocky outcroppings, though.
