Ssurran

Ssurran
CR 3 LN Humanoid
This humanoid lizard has a long tail and a frill of skin surrounding its head. Its teeth and claws are large and sharp.
Ssurrans are desert dwelling offshoots of the lizardfolk. They are stronger and tougher than their relatives, and their claws are as sharp as swords. Most ssurrans prefer to use their natural weapons in combat, but they do carry ranged weapons as a backup. Their leaders often use a magical weapon, but this is as much a trophy of past victories as it is a tactical choice.
Ssurrans live as raiders and hunters, and some become reasonably well integrated into desert dwelling societies of other species. They are skilled at threats and bullying, and raiding tribes prefer to extract tribute from the same source repeatedly instead of just murdering their victims and taking what they want. Ssurran raiders almost always offer surrender as an option, and only kill those that betray their word or fight back with lethal force. Funeral practices among ssurrans typically include ritual cannibalism, and they do what they can to avoid their dead falling into enemy hands.
Ssurran culture has a strong taboo about slavery. Their nurseries are among their most vulnerable locations, as a small band is left behind to guard the eggs and hatchlings of the entire tribe, and slavers sometimes raid these in order to raise the hatchlings in captivity for their strength and endurance. Even evil ssurrans typically despise slavery, and those that deal with slavers are seen as traitors in ssurran society.
A ssurran is about eight feet long from nose to tail. They rarely stand up straight, and so appear short to many other races. Like humans, ssurrans can live past the age of 100 very rarely, and many die through violence or hardship before they get old.
